Leveraging SASE to avoid a DDoS outage

Microsoft can’t catch a break after the recent CrowdStrike incident as they were hit by a DDoS attack which created an outage across Azure and other Microsoft services. Although not as widespread as the CrowdStrike outage, many companies in New Zealand were affected. When they heard about the outage, the team at Layer3 acted fast to keep their clients up and running.

How Layer3 saved the day

Layer3 is one of New Zealand’s leading and most forward-thinking MSPs, helping clients tackle their biggest IT and security needs with a strategy-first approach. Although other companies struggled with the outage, Layer3 knew exactly what to do to keep their clients working without interruption.

Using Todyl SASE as their network backbone, Layer3 routed their customers’ traffic from Auckland to a Point of Presence (PoP) nearby in Sydney where Azure services were unaffected. With other remote access approaches like VPNs and VM-based SASE solutions, connections must still pass through local affected IPs before routing elsewhere. Thanks to the multiple global PoPs and the private fiber backbone of Todyl SASE, the Layer3 team simply created a new routing policy for the client traffic. Over the Todyl Secure Global Network Cloud Platform™ (SGN), client traffic remained secure while routing to the other PoP.

Thanks to their fast response and ability to maintain secure connections through SASE, Layer3 kept their clients connected to the resources they needed to maintain business velocity. From their clients’ perspective, the outage was hardly a blip. One client, a Director at an NZ-based patent law firm, had this to say: "We barely skipped a beat. Thanks Daniel and the team at Layer3!"
